Join the Elders in Grudem

For the last several years, our elders have been so very slowly working our way through Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology. Grudem's volume has become a standard text in many seminaries across the country.

Its been an excellent time together that has deepened our understanding and awe of who God is and His Big Story in Jesus. It has been a delight to see the men grapple with and be humbled by familiar and some unfamiliar Biblical doctrines and how they fit together.

As we near the turn of the calendar year, I wanted to encourage you to join us in our study.

Get yourself a copy of Systematic Theology and make a commitment to start reading it in 2011. (Don't worry, its super easy to read!) It will not only deepen your own understanding of Scripture and the Lord, but it will give you insight into what our elders are thinking about and processing.

Let's go a little deeper together next year.

I've been thinking about diving into this book for awhile... may have to make it one of the 2011 resolutions!

What a great idea! It'd be cool to have either a book club or a Sunday School hour discussion on this text.

I have a copy and it has been soooo helpful in my study for POW. Doctrine of the Trinity--awe inspiring and yet accessible!

Maybe one of the elders could start a blog or a forum for serious questions. Big ideas deserve opportunity for clarification for sure. Which one of the men will field this? ;-)

I don't need to buy another book just to understand the scripture.

2 Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Is 34:16 Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.

HI Tim and others! I was fortunate to take a class from Grudem and use this book all the time. It is very helpful and he is a wonderful brother in the Lord

elybiado,

I don't comment or read blogs much, but I happened to be reading through Pastor Tim's blog tonight, and I was a bit intrigued by your comment. I don't know who you are, so it is difficult to understand the tone behind your post.

Of course, it's pretty clear, that the purpose of your post was to stand in opposition to the notion of reading a book (whether by a studied theologian or not) as a substitute for reading Scripture.

First, I hope you understand that no serious student of the Bible would ever presume to think that another book would in any way diminish the power of the Word of God, or the instructive nature of the Wonderful Counselor that we have in the Holy Spirit.

However, if you pause to think about it, we serve such an amazing God that He gave us all amazing gifts, by which we can bless others (and be blessed by others).

One of these gifts, actually a spiritual gift, is that of teaching. I believe that scripture is more than clear on the value of teaching the word, as it is mentioned many times throughout scripture. And I also believe that those gifted as teachers ought to write, if they can.

Shouldn't we rejoice that God has blessed His church with His servants who He has uniquely gifted with the power and ability to teach the Word of God?

Certainly, we are to approach all text outside the cannon of Scripture with discernment, but can't we also rejoice in the goodness of God to us, that He gives us teachers to literally serve as agents of the Spirit in enlightening our hearts to his Word?
