first day of school

We, like everyone else, started school this week. Zeke's first day of kindergarten was yesterday. First day of soccer practice is today. Donny Valliere and I are coaching his team together, since, as most of you know, I don't know what I'm doing.

So I'm jumping into Dobson's Bringing Up Boys as we navigate these new stages of Zeke's life. First chapter cracked me up! If you've got boys, why not read along with me this Fall?

My little Zak started his first day of school on Monday. Today was his second day of SLOCA, and he LOVES it!

He's going to help me make some Chinese food as we learn more about Ping (I think a roasted duck would be in bad taste, though).

My wife wrote a poem just before we sent Zak on his first day: http://musicmomie.blogspot.com/2007/08/kidergarten.html

It's amazing how fast they grow up...

I've been wanting to read the Dobson book, so I guess now is a good time to start. I also saw a book by Robert Lewis in the church library: "Raising a Modern Day Knight: A Father's Role in Guiding His Son to Authentic Manhood"

Has anyone read that one?

I just finished Bringing up Boys and just started the Modern Day Knight book. The Dobson book was good...lots of interesting things...but I didn't really get any practical hands on "this is what you do when this scenario arises" kind of advice. It was good, but not quite what I expected.

Look at Jeannett. . . getting on it early!

Raising a Modern Day Night is the guide that many have used in our church to help design Manhood ceremonies. I have it and have skimmed it. I will read it carefully when Zeke turns 10. I think Henry is a bit young for his manhood ceremony, but who am I to say. Just my take. . .

PT - you are a great dad and keep up the cause. I will take you up on the suggestion and get Dobsons book.

While kind of on the subject, I have a book I would like to have you scan and critique. Suzie may want to glance at it too. Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters by Dr. Meg Meeker. She reinforces some simple principles and reminders of how we influence our daughters and you may be pleasantly surprised to see the clinical side of Chapter eight - Teach Her Who God Is.

Jeff, I think I've heard you talk about that book before. Bring it on!

I'd like to read Dobson's book, I haven't read it yet.

What is a manhood ceremony???

A rite of passage to manhood ceremony. Ask Jim and Kathy Smith. I had the privilege of attending the MC for both Andrew and Nathan and had the chance to speak truth to them as one of the men in their lives. I took Zeke with me when he was barely 4 to Nathan's and he hasn't stopped talking about it since. Since then I have prayed out loud for him nightly that God would make him a knight and a warrior for the Lord among his generation. Everytime I do, he smiles with his eyes closed. (I peak sometimes!)

I know Henry's too young now...but a lot of times I have to read a book more than once to really "get it". Besides, I needed something to read and my brain is kind of on the "How to Parent" mode, so it filled the void. And who knows, Henry might be well advanced and need a MC in a couple weeks...he is after all, almost ten pounds now!

I've tried to start the Dobson book a few times this summer, but if never worked. Maybe this will kick my rear into gear. The first chapter is a riot.

I'm looking forward to roaming the soccer field with you and Donny as we figure out how to get our boys to play this game. Tonight is our parent meeting and first 'practice?'
